ELEGANT SOUTH DEVON ESTUARY HOUSE

This interior design project of a south Devon estuary house, is a stunning example of Studio G’s dedication to enhancing light, space and structure to create an extraordinary luxury home tailored to the taste and lifestyle of the owners. It is a beautiful representation of a tranquil riverside residence with harmonious, balanced interiors inspired by nature.

The design philosophy for this tidal estuary house is centred on a seamless blend of natural charm and contemporary elegance, creating a resilient and inviting family home with a soothing, laidback feel.

• Celebrating the estuary setting: Expansive glazing and an open-plan layout were utilised to flood interiors with light and frame the surrounding views. The coastal palette-soft sands, weathered driftwood, and sea-washed blues-layers the interior, bringing the outside in.

• Harmonising style: A harmonious interior blends rustic Devon charm with contemporary sophistication. Scandinavian minimalism and Danish mid-century furniture set the tone—clean lines, warm woods, and understated elegance ensure visual continuity and timeless appeal.

• Designed for living: Durability and ease of use were paramount. Low-maintenance surfaces and finishes were selected to withstand the rhythms of daily life while preserving refinement and comfort, supporting an active yet stylish lifestyle.

• Fostering connection: Inviting zones for socialising, from a generous open-plan kitchen to outdoor terraces, encourage gathering and conversation, all while maintaining the home’s cohesive aesthetic and affinity to its natural surroundings.

WELCOMING RECEPTION HALL

A sophisticated, calming aesthetic greets visitors in the grand reception hall, with its soft lighting and modern pendant fixtures. A console and round, painted wooden bobble pedestal table, crowned with delicate glass pendants, anchor the space. A statement rattan sideboard adds warmth and character. A sweeping staircase with glass balustrade sets the tone for the rest of the house, leading to spaces that celebrate both comfort and craftsmanship.

LIVING ROOM WITH A VIEW

This room celebrates the house’s most breathtaking view. A curved sofa anchors the space, complemented by colonial-style rattan chairs. A bespoke rusted iron pedestal coffee table with a limestone top, crafted by a French artisan workshop, stands as a favourite piece. A dramatic driftwood artwork ties the room back to its estuary setting.

COASTAL CHIC KITCHEN AND DINING ROOM

At the heart of the home is a magnificent open-plan L-shaped open-plan kitchen and dining space bathed in natural light with spectacular views of the river and lush landscape. The large island is painted in Farrow & Ball’s Stiffkey Blue. Rattan kitchen stools in a fresh green tone introduce texture and a playful accent. Danish retro furniture was meticulously re-upholstered and French polished. A bespoke two-metre round marble table seats twelve, creating a statement of scale and sophistication.

SITTING ROOM SERENITY

Envisioned as a sanctuary for relaxed living and gatherings, this sitting room offers sweeping views. A wood-burning stove provides warmth after a day of sailing. An oversized L-shaped sofa, upholstered in durable suede, accommodates a family of six. A palette of soft, whitewashed tones creates a calming, restorative atmosphere.

BEACH-THEMED BEDROOMS WITH BALCONIES

The showstopping principal suite offers uninterrupted corner vistas, with swivel chairs placed for optimal viewing. The dark glass dressing area flows seamlessly into the bedroom, where serenity takes centre stage. Two coral relief artworks complement the restful palette of soft whites and warm beiges. Linen curtains and an emperor-sized bed with an understated headboard balance elegance with comfort.

In the second bedroom, bamboo-shaped, white-washed bedside tables pair with a soft teddy-fabric chair and pale pink striped linen curtains. In the third bedroom, soft brushed cotton denim curtains layer varied shades of blue and grey. A local glass artist enriched the spaces with sea-inspired creations.

STATEMENT STAIRCASE AND LANDING

A bespoke installation of individually placed glass fish forms a dynamic shoal. Purpose-built niches accented with hand-blown glass vases add depth and a luminous coastal touch. Minimalist glass balustrades and warm amber pendants form a refined composition.

CINEMA AND GAMES ROOM

Boucle curtains banded in terracotta tones frame the room. A driftwood-based table lamp and a pair of retro Danish leather armchairs add character. A blue pull table and a generous recliner sofa accommodate the family in comfort. Large-scale photography of icons such as Grace Kelly and James Bond adds glamour.

On the lower ground floor is the home’s entertainment hub. A games room invites lively evenings, while the fully equipped cinema room offers the perfect setting for movie nights. Both spaces open directly onto the lower sun terrace, creating seamless indoor-outdoor living.

BATHING IN ELEGANCE

Soft white, caramel, and the palest blue tones come together in distinctive and luxurious porcelain onyx-style tiles. In the WC, patterned wallpaper and masculine navy-blue furniture create warmth, complemented by matte black brassware for a striking contrast and contemporary sophistication.

INTEGRATED OUTDOOR LIVING

Outside, this property truly shines with its inviting outdoor living and entertaining spaces. The rear garden offers expansive space and even a private mooring. The sun terraces are furnished with a generous dining table for twelve and a luxurious L-shaped sofa. Along with the large barbecue this makes the perfect setting to enjoy al fresco get-togethers while admiring the spectacular estuary scenes of waves, wildlife, windsurfing and water activities.
